Our Commitment to Honest Reviews
The non-GamStop betting market is filled with sites making bold claims -- generous bonuses, lightning-fast payouts, thousands of games. Some of these claims are legitimate. Many are not. Our job at York City Walls is to separate fact from fiction and provide you with reviews you can genuinely rely on.
Every site that appears on our platform has been personally tested by at least two members of our editorial team. We deposit real money, place real bets, request real withdrawals, and contact real customer support agents. We do not rely on screenshots, press releases, or claims made by the operators themselves. If we have not tested it, we do not recommend it.
This page exists so you can understand precisely how we arrive at our ratings and rankings. If you have questions about our methodology or disagree with one of our assessments, we welcome your feedback at our contact page.
Our 7-Point Scoring System
Every non-GamStop site we review is assessed across seven distinct categories. Each category carries a specific weighting that reflects its importance to the overall player experience. The final score is a weighted average expressed as a rating out of 10.
| Category | Weighting | What We Assess |
|---|---|---|
| Licensing & Security | 20% | Licence validity, SSL encryption, data protection, fair gaming certification |
| Game/Market Selection | 15% | Range of sports/games, software providers, live options, niche markets |
| Bonus Quality | 15% | Welcome offer value, wagering requirements, ongoing promotions, fairness of terms |
| Payment Methods | 15% | Deposit/withdrawal options, fees, limits, crypto support, GBP availability |
| Payout Speed | 15% | Average withdrawal processing time, pending periods, verification delays |
| Customer Support | 10% | Live chat availability, response times, email support, knowledge, language |
| Mobile Experience | 10% | Mobile site quality, dedicated app, responsiveness, feature parity |
1. Licensing & Security (20%)
This is the single most important factor in our assessment, which is why it carries the highest weighting. A site's licensing status tells you a great deal about its legitimacy, regulatory obligations, and the protections available to you as a player.
What We Check
- Licence validity: We verify that the operator holds an active, valid licence from a recognised gambling authority. We check directly with the issuing regulator, not just the site's footer claims. Commonly encountered licences include those from Curacao (Curacao eGaming), Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), Kahnawake Gaming Commission, Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner, and Anjouan.
- SSL encryption: We verify that the site uses 256-bit SSL encryption to protect data in transit. We check the certificate issuer, validity period, and whether it covers the entire domain.
- Fair gaming certification: We look for evidence of independent auditing or certification from organisations such as eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI, or BMM Testlabs. These bodies verify that random number generators (RNGs) are functioning correctly and that game outcomes are genuinely random.
- Data protection: We review the operator's privacy policy to assess how player data is collected, stored, and used. We check for compliance with relevant data protection standards.
- Responsible gambling tools: We assess whether the site offers deposit limits, loss limits, session time limits, cooling-off periods, and self-exclusion options -- even though these are not mandated outside the UKGC framework.
Pass/Fail Criteria
A site that holds no valid gambling licence from any recognised jurisdiction is automatically disqualified and will not appear in our recommendations. Sites with expired, suspended, or revoked licences are added to our blacklist. A site must score at least 5/10 in this category to be considered for inclusion.
2. Game/Market Selection (15%)
The breadth and quality of a site's offering is a major factor in the player experience. A well-stocked site should cater to a range of interests and preferences.
For Betting Sites, We Assess
- Number of sports covered (minimum expectation: 20+ sports)
- Depth of markets within popular sports (football, horse racing, tennis, cricket)
- Availability of in-play/live betting
- Competitive odds compared to industry benchmarks
- Niche and emerging markets (esports, politics, entertainment)
- Bet builder/accumulator features
- Live streaming availability
For Casino Sites, We Assess
- Total game count (slots, table games, live dealer, speciality games)
- Software providers represented (we look for reputable names such as Pragmatic Play, Evolution, NetEnt, Microgaming, Play'n GO, and others)
- Live casino quality and table variety
- Game filtering and search functionality
- Progressive jackpot availability
- Demo/free play mode availability
3. Bonus Quality (15%)
Bonuses are a significant draw for non-GamStop sites, but headline figures can be deeply misleading. A "200% bonus up to £5,000" means nothing if the wagering requirements are 60x and the maximum cashout is capped at £100. We look beyond the numbers.
What We Evaluate
- Welcome bonus value: The headline offer and how it compares to the market
- Wagering requirements: The multiplier you must meet before withdrawing bonus funds. Under 35x is good; 35-45x is average; above 45x is poor
- Game contribution rates: What percentage different games contribute to wagering. Slots at 100% is standard; table games often contribute 10-20%
- Time limits: How long you have to meet wagering requirements. 30 days is standard; less than 7 days is a red flag
- Maximum cashout caps: Some bonuses limit how much you can actually withdraw. We flag any unreasonable caps
- Ongoing promotions: Reload bonuses, cashback offers, loyalty programmes, VIP schemes
- Transparency: Are terms and conditions clearly displayed before you opt in?
Red Flags
We deduct significant points for hidden terms, retroactive rule changes, bonuses that cannot realistically be cleared, and maximum bet rules that are buried in fine print. If a bonus looks too good to be true, it usually is -- and we will tell you so.
4. Payment Methods (15%)
How easily you can deposit and withdraw your money is fundamental to a good experience. We test every payment method available at each site.
What We Assess
- Deposit options: Credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard), e-wallets (Skrill, Neteller, ecoPayz), bank transfers, cryptocurrency (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, USDT), prepaid cards, and mobile payment options
- Withdrawal options: The same range should be available for withdrawals as for deposits. Sites that only allow crypto withdrawals when you deposited via card score poorly
- GBP support: British players should be able to deposit and withdraw in pounds sterling without excessive currency conversion fees
- Fees: We check for hidden fees on deposits and withdrawals. Reputable sites do not charge fees; those that do are marked down
- Minimum and maximum limits: We assess whether deposit and withdrawal limits are reasonable for casual and high-volume players alike
- Processing times: How long deposits take to appear and how quickly withdrawal requests are processed
5. Payout Speed (15%)
This is where many non-GamStop sites fall down -- and where players feel the pain most acutely. We test withdrawal speeds by actually requesting payouts and timing the process from request to receipt.
Our Testing Method
For each site, we request at least three withdrawals using different payment methods. We record the time from initiating the request to the funds arriving in our account. We note any pending/processing periods, identity verification delays, and whether the site contacts us to delay or question the withdrawal.
Scoring Benchmarks
- Excellent (9-10): Crypto withdrawals processed within 1 hour; card/e-wallet within 24 hours
- Good (7-8): All methods processed within 24-48 hours
- Average (5-6): Processing within 3-5 business days
- Poor (3-4): Processing takes 5-10 business days
- Unacceptable (1-2): Withdrawals take more than 10 days or are not processed reliably
Sites that have a pattern of delayed, stalled, or refused withdrawals are added to our blacklist regardless of their performance in other categories.
6. Customer Support (10%)
You should never feel stranded when something goes wrong. We test customer support by posing realistic questions and scenarios at different times of day and week.
What We Test
- Live chat: Is it available 24/7? How quickly does an agent connect? Are responses knowledgeable and helpful, or are they scripted and unhelpful?
- Email support: How quickly do they respond? Is the response personalised and relevant, or is it a generic template?
- Language: Is English-language support available from native or fluent speakers?
- Issue resolution: Can the support team actually resolve problems, or do they escalate everything and then fail to follow up?
- Knowledge: Can agents answer questions about bonus terms, withdrawal procedures, and responsible gambling tools accurately?
We contact support at least three times during our testing: once during peak hours, once during off-peak, and once with a deliberately complex query. Sites with no live chat, slow email responses, or rude/unhelpful agents are marked down significantly.
7. Mobile Experience (10%)
The majority of online gambling now takes place on mobile devices. A site that does not work well on a smartphone is not fit for purpose in 2026.
What We Evaluate
- Responsive design: Does the site adapt smoothly to different screen sizes? Are buttons large enough to tap accurately? Is text readable without zooming?
- Loading speed: We test page load times on both Wi-Fi and 4G connections
- Feature parity: Can you access all the same features on mobile as on desktop? This includes account management, deposits, withdrawals, live betting, and customer support
- Dedicated app: If an app is available, we download and test it. We assess installation ease, stability, notification features, and biometric login support
- Game/market compatibility: Do all games and betting markets work correctly on mobile browsers? Some Flash-based or poorly coded games fail on mobile -- we identify these
How We Calculate the Final Score
Each category is scored out of 10 by our reviewers. The final score is calculated as a weighted average:
Scoring Formula
Final Score = (Licensing x 0.20) + (Games x 0.15) + (Bonuses x 0.15) + (Payments x 0.15) + (Payouts x 0.15) + (Support x 0.10) + (Mobile x 0.10)
For example, a site scoring 8/10 for Licensing, 7 for Games, 7 for Bonuses, 8 for Payments, 9 for Payouts, 6 for Support, and 7 for Mobile would receive: (8x0.20) + (7x0.15) + (7x0.15) + (8x0.15) + (9x0.15) + (6x0.10) + (7x0.10) = 1.60 + 1.05 + 1.05 + 1.20 + 1.35 + 0.60 + 0.70 = 7.55/10
How Often We Re-Test
The non-GamStop market changes rapidly. Sites can improve or deteriorate over time, and what was true six months ago may no longer apply. To keep our reviews accurate, we follow this re-testing schedule:
- Full review refresh: Every 6 months, each listed site undergoes a complete reassessment across all seven categories
- Spot checks: We conduct random spot checks on payout speeds and customer support every 8-12 weeks
- User reports: When we receive credible reports from readers about issues with a listed site, we investigate immediately and update our review if warranted
- Breaking changes: If a site changes ownership, loses its licence, significantly alters its terms, or is involved in a major incident, we reassess immediately
- New site monitoring: Sites launched within the past 12 months are re-tested more frequently (every 3 months) due to the higher risk associated with new operators
Every review on our site displays a "Last Updated" date so you always know how current the information is.
Editorial Independence & Affiliate Disclosure
York City Walls earns revenue through affiliate partnerships with some of the gambling operators featured on our site. When you click a link and register or deposit at a partner site, we may receive a commission. This is how we fund our operations, pay our team, and keep the site free to use.
Our Independence Guarantee
Affiliate commissions never influence our ratings, rankings, or editorial content. Our review methodology is applied identically to affiliate partners and non-partners. If a site that pays us a commission performs poorly in our testing, it will receive a low score -- and if it falls below our minimum standards, it will be removed entirely or added to our blacklist.
We have declined affiliate partnerships with operators that did not meet our standards, and we have removed previously listed sites when their service deteriorated. Our reputation depends on the accuracy and honesty of our reviews, and we will not compromise that for any commission.
How We Maintain Independence
- Review scores are finalised before any affiliate agreements are discussed
- Our editorial team has no visibility into commission rates or affiliate revenue from specific operators
- Operators cannot pay for higher rankings, featured placement, or positive reviews
- Our blacklist includes operators we could earn commissions from but have chosen to warn against
- All affiliate links are clearly identified throughout the site
