Volunteering at the City Walls Experience

Have you got a passion for history or archaeology? Would you like to help us engage visitors with York’s rich heritage and share a love of the past?

Situated in the historic gateway of Micklegate Bar, the City Walls Experience gives visitors the chance to discover 2000 years of history, exploring how York came to be a walled city and how the city’s defences have changed and evolved.

Our City Walls volunteers help us to tell this story of the fascinating history and archaeology of York’s city walls. From their room guide role, they provide information on York’s defences and what can be seen from them, offering increased opportunities for visitors to engage with the story of York’s defences.

Who Can Join?

As with many of our roles you do not need existing archaeological, historical or guiding knowledge or experience, we will help you to learn everything you need to know. We welcome expressions of interest to join the team from anyone with enthusiasm for history or archaeology and a desire to contribute their time to enhance our visitors’ experience. Volunteers at the City Walls Experience will also need to enjoy talking to a wide range of people and be able to offer a bright, friendly welcome to all.

When Can I Enquire?

We welcome new volunteer involvement via set intake periods each year. These offer an opportunity to join the team in the company of other new volunteers as well as lots of training and support along the way. Our next intake runs from 5th December 2022 to 5th January 2023. To apply within these dates click here.

You will be given a chance to read our Privacy Notice before applying to volunteer/undertake a placement with us. You can also click here to read this.
