Walking Tours

Join us on one of our Walking Tours around the City Walls

Tours start from City Walls Experience at Micklegate Bar at 10:30 AM and 2:00 PM daily.

Join a guide from York Archaeology to explore the city walls from both above and below. Starting from Micklegate Bar, you will discover all about one of the most important gateways to this historic city. The tour traces the walls between the Bar and Baillie Hill, which is the site of one of the castles built in York by William the Conqueror.

You will also hear about significant Roman archaeology of the Bishophill and Clementhorpe areas as well as York’s earliest churches and monastic sites. Learn about how the walls have evolved to accommodate York’s growing population, particularly in the industrial era. Discover the various uses that the ramparts and interval towers have had over the years as well as the challenges of conserving them in the 21st century. On the way you will pass ‘Tower Two’, where we are exploring the history and archaeology of one of the city’s earliest stone-built interval towers.

Created by the team behind the award-winning JORVIK Viking Centre, explore Micklegate Bar inside and out and discover more about the historic walls surrounding the city.

Please note: we offer an accessible version of the walking tour which covers roughly the same itinerary, entirely at ground level. Please enquire for more information.
