Excavating And Educating For 50 Years

York Archaeology

York Archaeology is a self-funded educational charity and a leading professional archaeological organization operating throughout the UK. Since our founding in 1972, we have built a strong reputation for delivering high-quality investigations and research for a broad range of clients and partners. Each year, we engage with over 1.2 million people through public, community, and educational projects, as well as our world-class visitor attractions. We have offices in York, Sheffield, and Nottingham.

For 50 years, we have led the way in delivering archaeological services and presenting our findings through public engagement and exceptional visitor experiences. Our Conservation Department ranks among the country’s top labs for conserving artifacts and structures from marine environments. We offer unparalleled facilities and expertise in preserving waterlogged organic finds.

York Archaeology is known for combining archaeological discovery with exceptional collections care, academic research, and inspiring public presentations. Our flagship museum, the JORVIK Viking Centre, has welcomed over 20 million visitors since opening in 1984. We also manage four York-based visitor attractions, organize touring exhibitions across the UK, and host one of Europe’s largest Viking festivals.

Moving Forward

With extensive public, community and educational audiences, York Archaeology’s work is made accessible through digital, interactive, experiential and discovery based learning opportunities. Through these channels, we engage with over 1.2 million individuals across the globe, enabling communities of all ages, demographics, and interests to enjoy learning about their past.
