The City Walls Experience at Micklegate Bar is open daily form 10:00 AM.

Please Note: Despite the closure to the walls we are still operating as normal.

17th February – 23rd February 2025: 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM

24th February – 30th March 2025: 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Note* – If you would like to do both the Museum and the Walking Tour please book a Museum Entry, then select the upgrade option for the Walking Tour.

Note** – The Walking Tour is not included in the Pastport. If you would like to partake in one please select the upgrade.

How to Book

To book a visit to Micklegate Bar (our exhibition in the gatehouse) please click here Add the required tickets to your basket (e.g. 2 adults) You will then be asked to select a date, then a time for your visit. If you have selected all the tickets you need, proceed to the Checkout.
If you would also like to participate in our walking tour, please click ‘continue shopping’. You can then go back into City Walls Experience at Micklegate Bar booking page, and select Walking Tour. Scroll down to the ‘Walk upgrade’ tickets, and select the tickets (e.g. 2 adults). Select a date and time. Remember to select a walking tour either before or after your time at Micklegate Bar (the walking tour usually lasts about 1 hour). You can then Checkout.
If you already have a ticket for Micklegate Bar (for example if you have purchased a Pastport) then you can just select the upgrade tickets.

If you are a UK taxpayer, you can help us further by turning your donation into a Gift Aid donation at no extra cost to you, which allows us to claim an extra 25p for every £1 you spend from the Government.

Please note this only applies to individual and family tickets, not larger groups.

Finding Us

City Walls Experience is a short walk from York Train Station along Queen Street and the perfect place to start your walk along the City walls. The exhibition is up the stairs inside the gatehouse. 

Join us for a tour around the Micklegate and Bishophill areas to explore the fascinating history of this quarter of the city.

Several bus services connect through York, making stops in the city centre. Visit the iTravelYork website for more information.

York’s six Park & Ride services allow you to travel to York by car, park for free in secure car parks and complete your journey into the city centre by bus. For timetables and more information, visit the iTravelYork website.

Micklegate Bar is a short walk from York Train Station.

York is on the East Coast main line between London and Scotland. It takes less than two hours to get to York from London. Trains run every half an hour, with at least 25 direct trains each week day.

Direct rail services also run to York from many of the UK’s main regional centres. York can be reached easily from all the following stations: Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Liverpool.

There are direct trains to and from Manchester International Airport and trains run every hour during the day.

The nearest car parks are Nunnery Lane Car Park and Priory Street Car Park. FREE, secure car parking is available at York’s six Park & Ride sites. Visit the iTravelYork website for timetables and more information.
